The majority of the population in these areas are farmworkers that work in ferneries, and some that continue to work in the dwindling citrus groves in Central Florida. Because fern work is seasonal, the majority of the workers are year-round residents in their communities and many have been working in the fern industry for as many as 5, 10, or even 20 years. This translates into a well-established community with roots in the area. A long time partnership with Stetson University in nearby Deland has resulted in on-going English-as-a-Second-Language, citizenship, and computer classes being offered to community members by Stetson students doing volunteer and service learning projects.
