FWAF helps farmworker communities throughout
Central and South Florida prepare for natural
disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and
flooding, through outreach and community education. The
Association organizes community members and community
groups to respond to farmworker areas impacted
by natural disasters by coordinating food, water,
and household item distribution activities, and
by conducting outreach and education about resources
and assistance available to help community members
rebuild their lives and homes. In addition,
FWAF staff work with federal and state disaster
response agencies to ensure that they provide
assistance to farmworker and rural communities. The
Farmworker Association is currently working with
farmworkers and FEMA to resolve an Administrative
Complaint filed against FEMA in late 2005, alleging
mishandling of cases, discriminatory practices,
and insufficient inspections and allocations
of monetary compensation for damages. Also,
along with the Coalition of Florida Farmworker
Organizations, FWAF is currently involved in
a lawsuit against FEMA for denying emergency
housing to undocumented immigrants following
the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005. FWAF is
seeking a change in FEMA practice so that undocumented
immigrants will be allowed access to emergency
housing, which would be in accordance with federal
law that states all persons are entitled to non-cash
emergency assistance. |
