Agricultural workers frequently come in contact with pesticides. This exposure can result in a range of acute and chronic health issues. The Together for Agricultural Safety project (TAS) was developed in 1997 to design, implement, and evaluate a program to reduce the adverse health effects commonly associated with pesticide exposure. 

Focus on the fernery and nursery industry

TAS focuses on worker communities in the fernery and nursery industries in Volusia, Lake, Seminole, Orange and Polk counties. The four-year project was funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Health science researchers from the University of Florida (UF) and the University of South Florida (USF) worked together with staff from the Farmworker Association of Florida (FWAF) and Best Start Social Marketing, a nonprofit social marketing firm in Tampa, Florida. The outcomes can be used to guide the design of current and future health interventions.
